Plot

‘The Company’ has shortened the story by selecting only some of the adventures from the original and by leaving out or changing some of the characters. Effectively, our Alice will only meet the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, the caterpillar, the Mad Hatter, the King – not the Queen – of hearts and his army of playing cards. With help from the Cheshire Cat’s potions and the Caterpillar’s magic mushroom, Alice will grow smaller and bigger at different stops along the way from the hall of doors, through the beautiful garden, the Mad Hatter’s tea party and finally the King’s garden where the final game will be of football rather than croquet. Alice will anger the King by scoring a goal and be subsequently accused and sentenced to death for stealing the King’s cakes. After much problem solving and trying to make sense of these strange characters and situations Alice will wake up as from a dream. She will be a different Alice, hopefully more confident and mature, but has it really been a dream? A final appearance of the White Rabbit joining Alice for a song will leave this open to interpretation. Throughout the play, children will watch Alice solve problems, make mistakes, learn to listen, understand how time, logic and justice work to become increasingly resilient to make sense the world of adults, so full of rules and judgement that often appears unfair, crazy and even dangerous.

I’m late, I’m late
For a very important date
No time to say “Hello, Goodbye”,
 I’m late, I’m late, I’m late.
I’m late, I’m late
For a very important,
Very important date
No time to say “Hello, Goodbye”,
 I’m late, I’m late, I’m late.

I’m late, I’m late
For a very important date
No time to say “Hello, Goodbye”,
 I’m late, I’m late, I’m late.
I’m late, I’m late
For a very important,
Very important date
No time to say “Hello, Goodbye”,
 I’m late, I’m late, I’m late.

I’m late, I’m late
For a very important date
No time to say “Hello, Goodbye”,
 I’m late, I’m late, I’m late.
I’m late, I’m late
For a very important,
Very important date
No time to say “Hello, Goodbye”,
 I’m late, I’m late, I’m late.
No time to say “Hello, Goodbye”,
 I’m late, I’m late, I’m late.
No time to say “Hello, Goodbye”,
 I’m late, I’m late, I’m late.

Down, down, down
I’m falling down
Down, down, down
I wonder where I am
Are we in London?
Are we in Australia?
Or is it Europe?
Or is it Asia?
I´ve come a long way!
I wonder how far.
Down, down, down
I’m falling down.

Down, down, down
I’m falling down
Down, down, down
Far away from London town
I miss my cat Dinnah
Who will give her dinner?
There are no mice around here
You might catch a bat
That’s very like a mouse
But do cats eat bats?
Do cats eat bats?

Down, down, down
I’m falling down
Down, down, down
I wonder where I am
Down, down, down
I’m falling down
Down, down, down
I wonder where I am
I wonder where I am
I wonder where I am

I’m the Cheshire Cat
I’m the Cheshire Cat
I’m always calm
With a big grin
I’m the Cheshire Cat
I’m the Cheshire Cat
I can appear and disappear
Whenever I like
I’m the Cheshire Cat
I’m the Cheshire Cat
I can also disappear
And leave my grin behind
I’m the Cheshire Cat
I’m the Cheshire Cat
I can change my shape
No matter the size.
I’m the Cheshire Cat
I look a bit fat
I’m much bigger
Than a regular cat
I’m the Cheshire Cat
I’m the Cheshire Cat
I’m the Cheshire Cat
I’m the Cheshire Cat
I’m the Cheshire Cat
I’m the Cheshire Cat
I’m the Cheshire Cat
I’m the Cheshire Cat

When we do something exciting and new
Time goes fast, isn’t that true?
But today we are all bored
Nobody dances, nobody sings, nobody talks.

When we are happy time goes fast.
When we’re bored time is slow.
Why is time so slow, so slow?
Why is time so slow, so slow it almost stops?

Six o’clock, six o’clock,
It’s teatime, it’s teatime.
Keep the tea things on the table
It’s always six o’clock.
It’s teatime, it’s teatime.
There’s never any time to wash up
when time stops.
Because it’s always six o’clock,

It’s teatime
It’s always six o’clock,
It’s teatime
Don’t you know?
It’s teatime
It’s always six o’clock,
It’s teatime
Don’t you know?

When we are happy time goes fast.
When we’re bored time is slow.
Why is time so slow, so slow?
Why is time so slow, so slow it almost stops?

When we are happy time goes fast.
When we’re bored time is slow.
Why is time so slow, so slow?
Why is time so slow, so slow it almost…
it almost stops?

Life is but a dream
And things are not
What they seem to be
Let’s clap our hands
We are living in Wonderland
Nothing to fear
No time for tears
So come and take my hand
Let’s get lost in Wonderland

Let’s clap our hands
We are living in Wonderland
Let’s clap our hands
We are living in Wonderland

Life is but a dream
And things are not
What they seem to be
But you will understand
When we get to Wonderland
A great place for you
All your dreams will come true
So come and take my hand
And let’s get lost in Wonderland

Let’s clap our hands
We are living in Wonderland
Let’s clap our hands
We are living in Wonderland
Let’s clap our hands
We are living in Wonderland
Let’s clap our hands
We are living in Wonderland
Living in Wonder… Wonder… Wonderland
