Set in Verona, two families the Capulets and Montagues, are enemies and have hated one another for a long time. Romeo Montague is a peaceful boy more interested in love than in fighting.

Mercutio, his closest friend, encourages him to go to a costume party at the Capulets’.

At the party, Romeo meets Juliet Capulet and falls instantly in love with her and so does she. But they are both told that their families are enemies. Romeo decides to sneak to Juliet’s bedroom window. At the famous “balcony scene”, they agree to get married even though their families would never accept it. The next day Romeo and Juliet go to Friar Laurence who agrees to marry them. On Romeo’s way home from the wedding, Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin, challenges Romeo to a duel. Romeo refuses to fight but Mercutio agrees instead. Tybalt stabs Mercutio to death. Romeo, angrily, kills Tybalt and for his action he is banished from Verona. Juliet’s father forces her to marry Count Paris. She goes to Friar Laurence for advice. He gives her a strong potion that will make her fall into a deep sleep for 40 hours but everyone else will think she is dead.

Meanwhile, Friar Laurence will send a message to Romeo to come back to Verona and meet Juliet when she wakes up so then they will be able to leave Verona together. Juliet follows her part of the plan, but something goes wrong. Friar Laurence’s message never makes it to Romeo. Instead, Romeo hears that Juliet is dead. Romeo returns to Verona, goes to Juliet’s tomb and drinks a strong poison and dies. Juliet wakes up and finds Romeo lying next to her. She takes Romeo’s dagger and kills herself. When the Capulets and Montagues painfully realized what happened to their children, they agree to put an end to their meaningless years of fighting.
