Dorothy is a young girl who lives on a farm with her dog Toto in Kansas. As the play starts, Toto is hiding and there is a storm coming. Dorothy is worried. She calls Toto but he doesn’t listen. Soon the wind begins to blow and a bad tornado comes their way.
Dorothy’s house whirls round in the wind and is flown away. The house lands in a strange place we learn is called Munchkin Land and the Munchkins welcome Dorothy and thank her for killing the Bad Witch of the East. Dorothy’s house fell on the witch and killed it. A Munchkin informs Dorothy that there are three more witches in Munchkin Land, the other Bad Witch of the West, The Good Witch of the North and the Good Witch of the South. Dorothy wants to go back to Kansas and the Good Witch of the North advices her to walk down the yellow brick road to ask the Wizard of Oz for help. She gives Dorothy the dead witch’s magic ruby shoes for protection. Dorothy heads to Oz and soon meets a Scarecrow who wants a brain, a Tin Man who wants a heart and a Cowardly Lion who desperately wants courage. All four friends walk down the yellow brick road to find Oz in Emerald City. They want to ask the Wizard for help. Soon, they arrive in Emerald City and meet Oz. He tells them he will grant their wishes if they bring him the Bad Witch of the West. Dorothy and her friends go to the land of the Winkies to find the witch, but they fall asleep and the witch finds them. She wants Dorothy’s magic shoes, so she makes them all prisoners. When they wake up, they are all tied up. The scarecrow thinks of a plan to escape, proving he has a brain; Lion unties everyone proving he is brave, and Dorothy throws a shoe up into the air to trick the witch. The witch tries to catch it, but the Lion ties her up proving his courage. Now the witch is the prisoner. The Tin Man makes her promise to leave and never come back again proving he has a kind heart. All four friends go back to Oz, but they learn from the good witch of the North that there is no Wizard of Oz. The friends are very surprised and worried. But they soon learn that they already have what they wanted. The Scarecrow has a brain, the Tin Man has a heart and the Lion has courage. The witch congratulates them and tells Dorothy she can use her magic shoes to go back home to Kansas. They all say goodbye, Dorothy clicks the heels of her shoes three times and they take her back home where Toto is waiting. They all learn to reach inside to find strength, courage and kindness and celebrate by singing ‘The Magic is Within You’.
